The Mesilla Valley model railroad club has a long history dating back to the 1960s when it was formed by a group of model railroad pioneers at that time. The layout and clubhouse were located in a Santa Fe water treatment chemical building. The original layout was located upstairs in the meeting room in the downstairs area. The structure was rented from the Santa Fe railroad for one dollar a year and continued that way until the club moved to the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds in the early 1990s. At that time, an arrangement was made with the Fairgrounds to use an existing Quonset hut on the property. A large HO scale layout was built within this building in an area of 20 feet by about 110 feet and remains there today.
In Las Cruces we now have an N Scale group that has formed with the interest in building a layout at the Fairgrounds. With the help of the HO club a new group of N Scalers has collaborated with the fair to acquire the use of two newer Quonset huts for the purpose of building two separate layouts in adjoining buildings. The club activity now for both the N and HO groups is to start construction in the buildings, two separate, but new layouts. So, as you can imagine, the activity in both groups right now is abuzz with planning, painting and anticipation of two new layouts. This site has been formed to spread the word of these two clubs and their activities.
